December 28 Message / "We Ran Out Of Paper"
Good morning!
I was asked to speak here today about God’s plans for the coming months in my life. I am thankful to be standing in front of my family, my friends, my church and sharing what God has been creating and doing in my life.
Indira Gandhi, the only female Prime Minister of India once said:
My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group. There is much less competition.
My name is Jeff Heyer and I am in the first group. I was born on April 23rd in the city of Manila on the main island of the Philippines. I was adopted one year later by two amazing parents, and an older brother (also adopted from the Philippines four years ahead of me.) Although I look like I am 19, I am really 25. Honest!
God has brought a lot of great people, relationships, opportunities, and events into my life the past 3 and ¾ years I have been attending First Church, and I couldn’t be more thankful. In the next 3 and ½ months, I will be venturing out into the COLD Adirondack Mountains of Speculator, New York to embark on a Leadership and Discipleship Program, based out of Camp-of-the-Woods, called L.I.F.T. – which stands for Leaders in Further Training. L.I.F.T. exists to equip leaders, ages 19-26, to become biblically-guided and culturally- engaged representatives of Jesus Christ in accordance to their unique gifts and callings.
The LIFT students will be engaged in constant service projects around Camp-of-the-Woods on the weekends, engrossed in essay writing and discipleship studies during the week, enjoying a brisk outdoor hike on Wednesdays, and enjoying a day off on Thursdays. On Sundays, we will travel to a church, meet different church leaders, and help participate in several outreach events throughout the week.
The greatest and, I feel, strongest aspect of this program is the two week mission trip to Brazil. Despite knowing that I have to raise $1,500 dollars prior to the trip – the thought of sharing Jesus Christ and the Word of God with people in another country is just mind boggling. Our LIFT team will be working closely with Project AmaZon Medical Missionaries and stationed in small remote villages along the Moju River, a large tributary of the Amazon, close to Belem. Our goal is to provide much needed man-power to assist with medical clinics, help with the needs of new churches or expanding local churches through construction projects and other work, and help decrease water-borne diseases by supplying and installing water filters donated by Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse Ministry.
Now how can you NOT find that mind boggling? Perhaps they will have a soccer ball to play with on our down time?
I want to look at a passage from the bible. It comes from the book of Romans, chapter 12, verses 6 through 8.
6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
This passage really stood out to me because I believe that God has called us to do certain things in our life with the gifts that have been given to us. We shouldn’t just ignore those great talents that have been given to us, let us use them! If you hear a friend compliment you on your great speaking ability, keep it in mind. If someone comes up and tells you what great artistic ability or writing ability you have, don’t ignore that. It is quite possibly a gift which God has given to you that you have recognized yet.
What are the gifts that God has given me? I’m not sure yet. And that is what I am eagerly waiting to find out. I hope to get so much out of the L.I.F.T. program, and I hope to make many new connections of faith and friends while I am up in New York. I hope to hear God’s calling for my future plans, for my future career, and for my future life. Does God want me working in the secular world or is God calling me into ministry? I believe after 3 and ½ months surrounded by God and ongoing ministry, 24 hours a day – I hope to have a clear understanding of where God wants to bring me in my life.
What am I leaving here in Connecticut and in Wethersfield? Hebrews 13:7 states:
7Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
My family, my church family, my girlfriend, my closest friends, my colleagues, my pets… even my favorite Hartford Wolfpack hockey team!
You, my friends, have been great leaders in my life. When we have had the privilege to talk, you have shared your stories with me, you have shared your faith with me, your struggles and your victories. We have shared great laughs, tears of joys and tears of sadness. You have sat down and studied the Word of God with me, or you may have just said hello to me in passing in the church hallways or at church events. Did you know – you made a difference in my life. No matter how long the conversation was, whether it was two words long or two hours long, you made my day. And with your help, your words, and your leadership, I feel more equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead of me in New York and in Brazil.
Today’s message is on John 21:25. Jesus does great miracles and if all of them were written down – it is true, the world would not have room for all the books written. But I know, especially in Brazil – there is plenty of room right now for one book, the bible. Many people in the small remote villages on the Moju River have never heard of Jesus or have had the opportunity to open the bible, and I will do everything in His power to share Jesus Christ with them, leaving not a single person empty handed, without the Word of God in their hands.
Think about it today. What do you want for the new year? How can you change someone’s life this coming year? And how can you, not leave here – empty handed?
